Let me lay everything out onto the table, I am an American and am in collusion with the Russians here in Japan. We are collaborating together as friends to make interesting photos. My friend Anna is not a professional model but she certainly could be one. We have worked together on a variety of shoots, namely in demonstrating the studio capabilities of the Hasselblad X1D.
I often photograph Anna using a beauty dish. In the image to the right, I was photographing her with a foldable beauty dish Broncolor sells as a beauty box and as the name implies it is sort of a beauty dish and sort of a soft box, but as far as I am concerned it is pretty much a beauty dish with a sock on it for extra diffusion. The interesting thing about this beauty dish aside from it being foldable is that it also has the ability to swap out the center diffuser for a gold one which warms up the skin. However, I left it as the standard white reflector as I wanted a somewhat white more porcelain look to her skin.
I have also photographed Anna with my H4D-50, a CCD based sensor which I love for its resolution and reproduction of skin tones, granted I tweaked the images which negate Hasselblad's amazing natural color solution profiles which are embedded in the Phocus software. In these images I photographed her with a diffused parabolic umbrella and as always I like to get that umbrella as close as possible to her and just out of frame.
I really like photographing with Anna, and like I said, she isn't a professional model, she just does this for fun, and for me I enjoy her company and photographing her to see how many different looks she has, in many regards, she is like a Matryoshka doll with so many different layers to her look and personality.
